Central Hobart Precinct Plan
Economic Demographic and Employment Study
In 2019, the City of Hobart and the Tasmanian Government agreed to work together to deliver a Central Hobart Precincts Plan to guide future development and public infrastructure provision and funding in Central Hobart.
A key component to developing a robust evidence-based Plan is an in-depth understanding as to the current supply, and future demand for a range of land uses within Central Hobart. These land uses include housing, office, retail, entertainment, visitor accommodation and education facilities. To understand the current supply and project the likely future demand for these various land uses, HillPDA was commissioned to undertake an economics, demographics and employment study (the study). The study provided a summary of relevant socio-economic data and forecasts employment, floorspace and resident/student and visitor accommodation requirements within Central Hobart to support the overall development of the Plan.
Outcome
The outcome of the study was a highly visual and succinct document which analysed historical and projected socio-demographic trends coupled with direct consultation with key Government and private stakeholders to identify the net increase in several land uses to be provided in the Precinct over the period to 2041. The study identified the growth in employment by industry type; the amount of floorspace that these workers would require; various population projections including residents, students and visitors and various accommodation types including residential (including bedroom mixture), student and visitor accommodation.
